Food Sustainability

No-one should be left having to choose between paying rent, energy bills or buying food. However, it is an inevitable consequence of DWP cuts and unforgiving benefit sanctions that we have seen an exponential rise in food poverty and foodbank usage in recent years.

There are a number of organisations, run primarily by tireless volunteers, doing their best to tackle the effects, stigma and indignity of food poverty in Glasgow Pollok, and widen access to healthy, quality, affordable food. Housing

Everyone has the right to good quality housing, regardless of their financial situation. Since the SNP came to power in 2007, the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme has helped to deliver over 17,000 affordable homes in Glasgow, more than 2/3rds of which are for social rent.

Housing Associations don’t just provide safe, warm, quality housing – they are at the heart of their communities too, responding to need, whether it be food or fuel poverty, welfare advice or digital inclusion.

I have had the great pleasure of witnessing many housing developments break-ground in Glasgow Pollok then reach completion, and personally welcoming new tenants to their fabulous new homes.

It is not all about the New Builds, though – in Glasgow we have a tremendous asset in our tenement stock, and the SNP is committed to continuing to preserve these historic buildings so Glaswegians can continue to call them home for decades to come.
